What AIUC-1 is and who issues the certificate

All AIUC-1 certificates are issued by the Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company. Accredited auditors prepare an AIUC-1 audit report with a recommendation to issue the AIUC-1 certificate alongside technical testing results from an accredited AIUC-1 technical testing body. These two inputs are evaluated by the AIUC-1 Certification Committee and the certificate is issued if the audit report and testing results meet all AIUC-1 requirements. This structure mirrors proven certification paradigms like HITRUST and FedRAMP, which also have a central certification body combined with a network of accredited auditors. The accredited auditors page compares the three models and lists every accredited organization.

Auditor roles

Two models of auditor delivery:
  1. Introducing AIUC-1, scoping, and fieldwork. AIUC runs the evaluations.
  2. Introducing AIUC-1, scoping, fieldwork, and evals. The auditor runs the evaluations, and AIUC reviews the work.
Both models end with the auditor preparing the audit report and the certification recommendation. AIUC issues every certificate.

How to become accredited

Only the Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company can accredit AIUC-1 auditors. In selecting auditors for accreditation, emphasis is on:
  1. Consistency - ensuring uniform application of AIUC-1 controls
  2. Technical capabilities - ensuring that AIUC-1 controls are appropriately tested
In practice, this means that new auditors are accredited gradually, prioritizing:
  1. Trusted auditors with a demonstrated track-record of excellence
  2. Auditors with AI capabilities such as ISO 42001 accreditation
